Restaurant Review: Weslodge Saloon

While restaurant concepts in Dubai are expected to push relentlessly forward or die trying, Weslodge Saloon harks back to a bygone era. The restaurant, which opened at the JW Marriott Marques Hotel in April, is a colourful reinvention of the Western saloon. But despite its old American-inspired roots, Weslodge offers a vibrant downtown edge brought to the Emirate from Toronto, Canada, where it has been a renowned dining destination since 2012. With an irresistible offering of a Modern American menu featuring prime beef and stiff cocktails, the newly opened spot is already making its mark on Dubai’s restaurant scene.



The panache-exuding interior pays homage to the Western saloon theme, complete with giant antlers and 20th century wall photographs alongside saloon-style cabinetry and classic spindle chairs studded around marble-top tables and a majestic bar. Add to that the panoramic 68th-floor views of Dubai and you have yourself a place that manages to feel sophisticated, casual, cozy, and cool all at the same time.



What does one order at Weslodge? To start, there is a Crisp Quail Egg wrapped in susage, a hamachi ceviche with crispy, or if you are feeling bold, foie gras with apple shavings on brioche – all equally delightful. For mains, one could choose from sophisticated takes on fish, burgers and even fried chicken, but if you must choose but one, let it be a steak, as the people at Weslodge Saloon take their beef seriously with most cuts on the menu being USDA-Prime-grade beef. For the review, we opted for the tenderloin, which every square centimetre of was thoroughly and expertly burnished to a deep, gorgeous, crackling crust that injects a smoky, primal contrast to the lush, sensual texture of the meat itself.

Unexpectedly delicious side orders of mostly Southern favourites serve as the perfect accompaniments to the meat. An honourable mention goes to the Mac and Cheese made of hand-rolled pasta with a hint of jalapeno, and the Thrice Cooked Chips.



When it came time for dessert, we loosened our belts and ordered the Gianduja Sable, a scrumptious yuzu tart topped with droplets of meringue and yogurt sorbet that provided a nourishing finish to a glorious meal. Link at any good saloon, cocktails at Weslodge are approached with the same innovation and thoughtfulness as the food. Hand-selected teams of expert mixologists break the rules to create unique interpretations of classic drinks with saloon favourites, such as the Orange Spiced Old Fashioned and Barrel Aged Negroni.



Overall, the food is a fine mix of hearty and sophisticated while the whole experience is likely to impress thanks to affable yet subdued atmosphere and authoritative yet accommodating service. We will definitely be going back to this sensational saloon!
